How to be the Race Director's Best Friend Follow these tips for guaranteed success...
2. DON’T SEND A STAMPED ADDRESSED ENVELOPE! Remember, numbers will not be sent out before the race. Doing it this way means that there is no need for a closing date for postal entries. If you do send me an envelope, it only confuses me! If I receive one, but then don’t send it back, you may assume that I haven’t received your entry and not turn up on the night. Then, even worse, you may want your money back!! 3. COMPLETE THE ENTRY FORM LEGIBLY! You know who you are and the name of your club, but I may not! 4. COMPLETE YOUR ENTRY FORM PROPERLY! I need to know in which category you are competing, your date of birth and your NoEAA Membership Number, if any. 5. IF YOU CAN’T PRE-ENTER, TURN UP EARLY ON THE NIGHT! All entries have to be input to computer, and, in the past, we have still been doing this long after some of you have finished the race! This inevitably delays the presentation. If you turn up after 7 o’clock your entry may not be accepted. We “open” at 5:30. The start will not be delayed to accommodate late arrivals 6. ON THE NIGHT, FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS! Do what the Police and the marshals tell you! Don’t hassle them, or indeed anyone else. I need all the help I can get, and if I don’t get it next year there won’t be a race! 7. DON’T ANNOY THE TIMEKEEPERS! Don’t approach them to ask for your finishing time. Doing so may mean that they miss later finishers. 8. DON’T GET IN THE WAY OF THE RESULTS! After the race, don’t ask to know your position and time before the presentation. A refusal often offends! At this time a provisional set of results will be made available, and the race results will hopefully be posted on the race website the following morning. 9. REMEMBER, THE RACE ORGANISER IS ALWAYS RIGHT! Even when he’s wrong! If mistakes are made – and they sometimes are! – they can and will be rectified later. Making a fuss at presentation doesn’t help! 10. RESULTS COST MONEY AND TAKE TIME TO POST OUT! If you want your own set of results posted out to you, please put 50p in an envelope with your name and address on it. It would also help if you didn’t then seal the envelope! If you are waiting for results through the post, be patient. Don’t ring up three days after the race to complain that you haven’t got them! 11. IF YOU’RE HAPPY, I’M HAPPY! Brian Varley
